ABOUT ME:

My name is Sophie Hunter and I am an 19 year old portraiture artist based in Falmouth, Cornwall. I'm currently a student, studying BA Fine Art at Falmouth University.

Having grown up with an artistic mother, I have always been inclined to create; starting early with making small figurines out of oven bake clay, then moving to creating very stylistic illustrations. In lockdown, after feeling lost in my graphic style work, I found my love for portraiture and how people are portrayed in paintings. After spending those days in lockdown studying and mastering the craft of capturing ones features, and passing my graphic communications GCSE with a 9, I moved on to college. My fondness for the Surrealists were found in this time.

At A-levels I went on to focus the portraiture of the 19th century, specifically Manet, Millais and Sargent. I fell head over heals for the impressionist style and incorporated it into my final A-level project: The True Self-Portrait, this winning the Brian Edney Award in June 2023 and helping me to achieve an A* in my Art, Craft and Design course. After finish my time at Queen Mary's College, I have gone back and run workshops teaching how to paint self-portraits.
